I remember other things they were used for back in the late 40's..50's and prolly before that time too....along with the Sears Catologue.

Like the guy who called Sears and asked them if they had toilet paper in stock, the person at the store asked him if he knew the catalog number and he said "If I had your catalog I wouldn't need the toilet paper"
